Fully paid endowment policy: sell, surrender or keep?

A fully paid endowment is one with no premiums left to pay, either because the premium term has ended or because it was paid in one go. It costs you nothing more to keep, and it is the kind of policy buyers value most.

Our view

If you don't need the money before maturity, keep a fully paid endowment. It costs you nothing more and usually pays the most. Sell only if you need the cash now and a written offer beats your net surrender value.

Need some cash but want to keep the policy? A policy loan, or withdrawing cash benefits left with the insurer, may be enough. Ways to get cash from a policy

Why buyers prize fully paid policies

  • Nothing more to put in

The buyer pays you once and waits. No premiums means no risk of the price being eaten up by payments still to come.

  • Easier to price

With no premiums left, the value turns mainly on the maturity value and the years to maturity. How we value a policy

  • Limited-pay plans count too

A limited-pay endowment whose premium term has ended is fully paid, even if maturity is years away.

Fully paid policy questions

Is a fully paid endowment worth more to a buyer?

Usually, yes, compared with a similar policy that still has premiums due. Whether an offer beats your surrender value still depends on the years to maturity.

Do bonuses continue once premiums stop?

On a participating policy that is fully paid, bonuses can continue to be declared while the policy is in force. A policy made paid-up early is different. Paid-up policies

Can I get cash without ending the policy?

Often, through a policy loan or by withdrawing cash benefits you left with the insurer. Policy loan or surrender

I paid in one lump sum. Is that fully paid?

Yes. A single premium endowment has no premiums left after the first payment.
