How long does it take to surrender an insurance policy?

Singapore insurers that publish a figure quote a few working days to about two weeks, counted from the point they have a complete request. The figures measure different stages, so they can't be ranked against each other. Missing documents are what usually adds the most time.

What insurers publish

Each figure is the insurer's own, for the stage it describes. Insurers not listed don't publish one.

What slows a surrender down

Most delays come from the request, not the insurer.

  • The wrong form

Insurers use different forms for traditional, investment-linked and universal life plans. Find the right form

  • Missing documents

An original policy document, a bank proof or a trustee's consent that isn't enclosed sends the request back. Documents checklist

  • Signatures that don't match

Some insurers check signatures against their records and ask for a handwritten one.

  • Other people's consent

Joint owners, trustees or an assignee must sign too.

  • Overseas bank accounts

Payment abroad takes longer, as Great Eastern's figures show.

How to avoid a second round

  1. Download the form from your insurer's own page on the day you use it.
  2. Fill in every field and sign as on your insurer's records.
  3. Enclose every document the form lists, including the original policy if asked.
  4. Use a bank account in your own name, in Singapore if you can.
  5. Keep the acknowledgement, and check the payout against the figure you were quoted.
