How Manulife handles surrenders

Manulife starts you in MyManulife or its app. Some requests can be made online; others need your representative or a contact form.

See your value

In MyManulife or the Manulife app. For non-ILPs, look under financial information for Net Surrender Value; for ILPs, under investment and balance information.

Online, where allowed

Some surrender requests can be made online. Policies under trust, universal life plans and policies on hold may not qualify.

Representative or contact form

Where a request can't go online, follow your representative's instructions or Manulife's official contact form.

Before you surrender

  • Your Net Surrender Value

Use the net figure in MyManulife, not the premiums paid or the projected maturity value.

  • Cover you may not get back

Manulife warns that surrender can mean losing benefits, and the chance of similar cover on comparable terms later.

  • Trusts and universal life

A trust can change who signs, and universal life plans follow their own route.

  • Charges and loans

Check for surrender charges and any policy loan, which come off the payout.

How to submit

  1. Sign in to MyManulife or the app.
  2. Find the right value: Net Surrender Value, or the ILP balance.
  3. Review surrender charges, any loan and the cover you would lose.
  4. Choose the route your product allows: online, your representative, or the contact form.
  5. Provide the signatures and documents Manulife asks for.
  6. Keep the acknowledgement and check the payout.

What to bring

What Manulife's instructions for your product ask for, including the right signatures where a trust is involved.

How long it takes

Manulife's FAQ sets a 3pm cut-off: requests received after it start processing on a later business day. Pending fund or internal transactions can delay the effective date, and the payout itself takes extra time.

Or sell it to us instead

We buy eligible Manulife endowment and whole life policies paid in cash. If we buy, you see our offer beside your net surrender value and choose. If not, the surrender route above stays open.

Manulife questions

Where is my Net Surrender Value?

In MyManulife or the app: under financial information for non-ILPs, and under investment and balance information for ILPs.

Is surrendering an ILP different?

Yes. Its value moves with fund prices, and pending fund transactions can delay the date it is processed.

Does a trust change who signs?

It can. A policy under trust may need the trustees, and may not qualify for the online route.

Can I surrender in the app?

Some requests can be made online. Others need your representative or Manulife's contact form.

What happens to my bonuses?

Bonuses already added usually count towards the surrender value. Future bonuses are given up.

Can I sell a Manulife policy instead?

Often, if it is a participating endowment or whole life policy paid in cash. Check yours and we tell you whether we would buy it.

You never need to give us your NRIC to read this guide or to reach Manulife's forms.
