How we value your policy

We work out what your policy is worth to us today, after the premiums we take on, the years we wait and the risks we carry. When that is more than your net surrender value, we can make an offer. When it isn't, we tell you.

What goes into the price

The same inputs for every policy. Your insurer's dated statement is our main source.

Net surrender value

What your insurer would pay today. It is the floor: an offer below it is no use to you.

Guaranteed values

The maturity value and cash values the policy guarantees. These carry the most weight.

Bonuses

Bonuses already added count in full. Future bonuses are not guaranteed, so we project them cautiously, at or below the insurer's lower illustrated rate.

Premiums left to pay

We pay them after the sale, so we take their value today off the price.

Years to the payout

Money paid in four years is worth less than money today. The longer the wait, the bigger that gap.

Loans and deductions

Any policy loan, its interest and premiums owing are taken off, the same way your insurer would.

A worked illustration

An endowment four years from maturity, with no premiums left. The 5% return is for illustration only, not the rate we use.

Illustration only. Not an offer and not any real policy.

Net surrender value todayS$30,000

Guaranteed at maturity, in 4 yearsS$40,000

Premiums leftNone

Worth today at a 5% yearly returnS$32,908

A possible offerS$31,500

How S$32,908 is worked out: S$40,000 ÷ 1.05 ÷ 1.05 ÷ 1.05 ÷ 1.05. The offer sits below that because our costs and risks come out of it, and above S$30,000 because otherwise you are better off surrendering.

The gap between S$31,500 and S$40,000 is not profit. Four years of waiting, our costs and the risk that bonuses or the insurer's position change all sit in it.

When we can't beat surrender value

It happens, and we would rather tell you than make a low offer.

  • Early in the policy

In the first years, many premiums are still to come and the maturity payout is far away. Their value today often leaves nothing above surrender value.

  • A large policy loan

A loan close to the cash value leaves little to pay for, and interest keeps adding to it.

  • A small gap to maturity value

If the maturity payout is only a little above today's surrender value, waiting for it isn't worth much to a buyer.

  • What we do then

We explain why in plain words and point you to your insurer's surrender route, with our guide to it. How to surrender

What we hold ourselves to

So you can trust the number on the offer.

No health questions

We never ask about the life assured's health. The only personal detail we use is the date of birth on the policy.

No charge to you

The check and the offer cost you nothing. Fees and payments

No surprises at signing

The offer rests on your insurer's dated statement. If the insurer's figures turn out different, we explain and revise in writing before you sign.

Valuation questions

Can I see your working?

We explain the main figures behind every offer: the values we used, the premiums left and the years to the payout. The return we aim for is our own business decision.

Why is your offer lower than the maturity value?

Because we pay you now and wait for the payout, paying any premiums in between. The illustration above shows how the wait changes what the payout is worth today.

Do you negotiate?

Our written offer is our best price on the figures we have. If you get a newer statement with higher values, send it and we look again.

Why might another buyer offer a different price?

Buyers use different assumptions about bonuses, returns and costs. Compare written offers, and compare each one with your net surrender value. Who buys policies

Does my insurer matter?

Yes. We buy from the main Singapore insurers, and we take each insurer's financial standing and bonus history into account. What decides resale value

See both numbers for your policy

If we would buy it, our offer sits beside your net surrender value. No NRIC, no obligation.
