Paid-up insurance policy: what reduced paid-up means

Making a policy paid-up, often called reduced paid-up, means you stop paying premiums for good and the policy carries on with a lower sum insured, worked out from the cash value it has built. You keep some cover and some payout without paying anything more.

How the paid-up value is worked out

  • From the cash value on the day

The insurer uses the policy's cash value, less any loan, to set a smaller sum insured that needs no more premiums.

  • Using the policy's own terms

The method is set in your policy contract. Ask your insurer for a written quote of the reduced sum insured before you decide.

  • Early on, little is left

A policy with little cash value becomes a very small paid-up policy, or may not qualify at all. Why cash value starts low

When paid-up makes sense

Go paid-up if you can't keep paying but want to keep part of the payout and cover. If you need cash now, compare surrender with a sale instead: a paid-up policy pays nothing until it matures or a claim is made.

Paid-up policy questions

What does reduced paid-up mean?

Premiums stop permanently and the policy continues with a lower sum insured, worked out from its cash value.

Can I go back to paying premiums?

Usually not. Treat a reduced paid-up change as final.

Can I still surrender a paid-up policy?

Yes, it usually keeps a cash value you can surrender later.

Can a paid-up policy be sold?

Sometimes. Its value is lower, but with no premiums left it can still interest a buyer. Check my policy
