Why an endowment can be worth more to a buyer

An endowment's surrender value is usually lowest in its early and middle years, because the insurer recovers its set-up and distribution costs over the term. It often stays below the premiums you have paid for years.

A buyer looks at the other end of the policy: the guaranteed maturity benefit and the bonuses already added. We work that payout back to today at the return we need, take off any premiums still to pay, and compare the result with your surrender value.

Close to maturity, the surrender value and the payout move together, so a sale adds less. Buyers usually look once about a third of the term has passed. How endowment plans work

Endowments we look at

Paid in cash, from the main Singapore insurers.

Kind of endowmentDo we buy it?Why
Regular-premium participating endowmentYes, usually after about a third of the termGuaranteed maturity benefit plus the bonuses already added
Limited-pay endowmentYesFew or no premiums left to fund
Single-premium or fully paid endowmentYesNothing left to pay, so the value rests on the payout
Endowment with a policy loanOftenThe loan and its interest come off the value
Lapsed endowmentOnly if it can be reinstatedA lapsed policy may have nothing left to transfer
Endowment under a trust nominationUsually notThe trustees would need to consent
Non-participating endowmentCase by caseThe value rests on its guaranteed benefits alone

Before you sell an endowment

Keep paying until the transfer

If a premium falls due before the assignment is recorded, pay it so the policy does not lapse.

Your cover ends

Many endowments carry a death benefit. After the sale it is paid to us, so arrange new cover first if you need it.

Compare the alternatives

A partial withdrawal or a policy loan may give you enough cash while you keep the plan. See every option.

Endowment questions

Is my endowment worth selling?

If it is past about a third of its term, paid in cash and in force, it is worth a check. The answer depends on its guaranteed maturity benefit, the premiums left and its current surrender value.

Does the plan name matter?

Yes. We price plan by plan, because each has its own guarantees and bonus history. Give us the name as printed on the policy.

What if it matures in a year or two?

Close to maturity, the surrender value and the payout are near each other, so a sale adds little. Waiting for maturity is often the better choice.

Can I sell a fully paid endowment?

Yes, and these are often the clearest case: no premiums are left, so the value rests on the maturity payout.
