How Income handles surrenders

Income treats a traditional life policy differently from an investment-linked plan. Use the current channels on Income's own page, not a copy of the form from elsewhere.

Traditional policies

Check your current surrender value, then complete the Application for surrender of life policy form.

Branch or email

Submit the completed form at an Income branch or through the email route Income gives on its page.

Investment-linked plans

For some ILPs, partial withdrawals can be made online in me@income. Full ILP surrenders follow Income's ILP instructions.

Before you surrender

  • Your net surrender value

Ask Income for the current figure after any loan and unpaid premiums.

  • Part or all

With an investment-linked plan, a partial withdrawal may give you the cash you need and keep the policy going.

  • The cover you give up

Surrender ends every benefit, riders included. New cover later may cost more, or be refused.

  • Special cases

Income's page sets out extra steps for policyholders overseas, trusts, estates and company owners.

How to submit

  1. Get the policy's current surrender value from Income.
  2. Download the Application for surrender of life policy form from Income's page.
  3. Complete and sign it.
  4. Attach a copy of your identification and proof of your bank account.
  5. Submit it at a branch or by the email route Income gives.
  6. Keep the acknowledgement.
  7. Check the payout against the figure you were quoted.

What to bring

A copy of your identification; if you give a FIN or passport, recent proof of address too. For a bank transfer, proof that the account is yours. Income's FAQ says the original policy document is not needed.

How you are paid

Income aims to pay within 7 business days of processing, by your chosen method, for the usual local route. Overseas transfers can take longer.
