How to calculate your surrender value

The figure your insurer quotes is not always what you receive. Take off any policy loan, its interest and anything else owed, and you have your net surrender value. Try it with your own numbers below.

Calculation questions

Why does my insurer's figure differ from this one?

Interest is added daily or monthly, bonuses can be revised and premiums fall due. Your insurer's dated statement is always the figure that counts.

Do I have to repay the loan before I surrender?

No. The insurer takes the loan and its interest off the surrender value and pays you the rest.

What if what I owe is more than the surrender value?

The policy may lapse with nothing paid out. Speak to your insurer quickly about your options.

Does a buyer take off the loan too?

Yes. The loan stays with the policy, so a buyer's price reflects it in the same way.
