Selling a policy close to maturity: is it worth it?

Usually not. Close to maturity, the payout is near, and most of the gap between today's value and the maturity payout is simply time. Waiting is often worth more than anything a buyer or your insurer will pay you early. Here is when it still makes sense to act sooner.

Why waiting usually wins near maturity

  • The last stretch pays well

As the illustration shows, the money you give up by leaving a few months early can work out to a high yearly return for simply waiting.

  • Terminal bonuses come at the end

A terminal bonus is often paid only at maturity or on a claim, and may be reduced or nil on surrender. Guaranteed and non-guaranteed bonuses

  • Few or no premiums left

Near the end there is usually little or nothing more to pay, so keeping the policy costs you little.

When acting before maturity still makes sense

Three situations where waiting may not be the right call.

You need the money before the date

And a policy loan, repaid from the maturity payout, isn't enough or isn't available. Policy loan or surrender

Premiums are still due

And you can't pay them. A sale passes them to the buyer; a paid-up change may also help. Stop paying premiums

Maturity is still years away

Then the policy isn't really close to maturity, and a buyer's offer can matter more. Selling an endowment

Our view

Within a year of maturity, bridge with a policy loan if you can, and wait for the payout. Sell or surrender early only if you need the money now and can't borrow it.

Close to maturity a buyer discounts the payout less, so an offer can come close to it. But the gain over surrender value is usually small, and waiting is usually bigger still. How we value a policy

Close to maturity: questions

How close to maturity is too close to sell?

There is no fixed line. Work out what you give up against the months left, as in the illustration. Within a year, waiting usually wins.

Will I lose the terminal bonus if I surrender early?

Often, in part or in full. Ask your insurer what it would pay on surrender today compared with at maturity.

Can I sell a policy that has already matured?

No. Once it matures, claim the payout from your insurer. There is nothing left to sell.

Is a policy loan repaid from the maturity payout?

Usually, yes. Whatever is owed is taken off the payout if you haven't repaid it.

Still need the money now?

We tell you whether we would buy your policy, and say so if waiting is better. No NRIC, no obligation.
