Selling a Singapore insurance policy from overseas

You can usually sell or surrender a Singapore life policy while living abroad, or before you emigrate. The steps are the same as in Singapore. What changes is how documents are signed and verified, how they travel, and where the money is paid.

Our view: decide before you go

If you are emigrating and don't want to keep the policy, settle it before you leave. Signing and verifying documents in Singapore is simpler, faster and cheaper than from abroad.

Keeping it is also an option. Many policies stay in force when you move overseas, with premiums paid from abroad. Check your policy for any residency terms first. Compare your choices

Signing documents from overseas

Insurers set their own rules. Ask yours before you sign anything.

  • Witnessing

Some insurer forms need a witness. Abroad, your insurer may ask for a notary or a Singapore embassy or consulate officer.

  • Original documents

Where the insurer needs originals, such as a signed assignment or the policy document, send them by tracked courier and keep copies.

  • Identity checks

We verify identity only after we have spoken, and only through a secure upload. Never by WhatsApp or an open web form.

  • Time

Allow longer than in Singapore. Courier and witnessing add days, and each insurer sets its own processing time. How long surrender takes

Getting paid

  • Into an account in your own name

For a surrender, your insurer pays; for a sale, we do. Either way, only into an account in the policyowner's name.

  • Singapore account is simplest

A Singapore dollar account avoids conversion and overseas transfer fees.

  • Tax where you now live

We can't advise on tax in another country. Ask a tax adviser there how a surrender or sale is treated.

Selling from overseas: questions

Can I sell my policy if I no longer live in Singapore?

Often, yes. The insurer's assignment rules and our own checks apply wherever you live. Tell us your country when you ask.

Do I need to fly back to Singapore?

Not always. Many steps can be done by courier and secure upload, but some insurers ask for documents to be witnessed in person.

Will my policy still cover me abroad?

Most life policies do, but some have residency or country terms. Read your policy or ask your insurer.

My policy is in US dollars. Can it be sold?

Some buyers don't take foreign currency policies. Tell us the currency and we give you a straight answer.

Leaving soon? Start with a straight answer

Tell us about your policy and your timing. No NRIC, no obligation.
