Partial surrender vs full surrender of a policy

A partial surrender, often called a partial withdrawal, takes out part of a policy's cash value and leaves the rest of the policy running, with lower cover and payouts from then on. A full surrender ends the policy. Not every plan allows a partial surrender.

Which plans allow a partial surrender

From the insurers' own forms and guides, checked 14 October 2026.

Investment-linked plans

Most allow you to withdraw some units, subject to a minimum balance and any charges. Surrendering an ILP

Some traditional plans

Some endowment and whole life plans let you reduce the sum insured and take part of the value. Manulife lists this as an option.

Shared forms

HSBC Life uses one form for partial withdrawal, full surrender and termination; Etiqa has a Surrender or Partial Withdrawal form. FWD's rules differ by product.

Partial surrender or a policy loan?

If you need part of the value and want to keep the policy, look at a policy loan first: you can repay it and restore the policy. Choose a partial surrender if you don't want a growing loan and accept a permanent cut.

A loan charges interest and comes off any later payout; a partial surrender charges no interest but reduces the policy for good. Policy loan or surrender

Partial surrender questions

Does a partial surrender reduce my sum assured?

Usually, yes, and in proportion to what you take out. Ask your insurer for the new figures before you sign.

Is partial withdrawal the same as partial surrender?

Insurers use both names. On investment-linked plans it is usually called a withdrawal; on traditional plans, a partial surrender or a reduction of the sum insured.

Can I sell a policy after a partial surrender?

Yes, if it is still one a buyer takes. Its value, and so the price, will be lower.

How do I apply?

On your insurer's form, often the same one used for a full surrender. All insurer forms

Thinking of ending it altogether?

See whether a sale would beat a full surrender. No NRIC, no obligation.
