How to surrender an investment-linked policy (ILP)

Surrendering an investment-linked policy sells your units at the next price the insurer sets, then takes off any surrender charge and amounts owed. Because the value moves with the funds, what you get depends on the day it is processed.

Before you surrender an ILP

  • Check the surrender charge

Many ILPs charge for leaving in the early years, on a schedule that falls over time. Your policy shows it.

  • Think about timing

Units are sold at the price on the processing day, so a falling market lowers what you get. Nobody can time this reliably.

  • Check for cover you would lose

ILPs often include life cover and riders. They end with the policy.

  • Look at the alternatives

A partial withdrawal, a switch to a lower-risk fund or a premium holiday may suit you better. Partial surrender · Premium holidays

Can an ILP be sold instead?

We don't buy investment-linked plans at present, and few buyers do, because their value moves with the market. For an ILP, your insurer's surrender or withdrawal route is usually the way to get cash.

If you also hold an endowment or whole life policy, that one may be worth checking. Policies we buy
