Surrendering a policy you bought through a bank

A life policy bought at a bank is almost always issued by an insurer the bank works with, not by the bank itself. The insurer holds your policy, sets its surrender value and processes the surrender. The bank's staff can help you with the form.

Surrender a bank-bought policy in three steps

  1. Identify the insurer

From the policy document or statement, as in the box above.

  2. Get that insurer's form

Use the insurer's own surrender form and process, not a bank form. Our guides cover each insurer.

  3. Submit to the insurer

Directly, or through the bank if the insurer accepts forms that way. Keep the acknowledgement either way.

Worth knowing about bank-sold policies

  • Many are single premium plans

Banks often sell single premium endowments with short terms. If maturity is near, waiting may pay more than surrendering. Close to maturity

  • The bank doesn't set the value

The surrender value comes from the insurer's policy terms, whoever sold it.

  • Investment-linked plans work differently

If yours is an ILP, its value moves with the funds. Surrendering an ILP

  • Complaints go to the insurer first

Then, if unresolved, to FIDReC. Useful resources
